Catfish Race
We had a pretty busy weekend. It included having some company, a "fun run" for the girls and the local festival. It was so nice to get out on such a pretty day and not have to listen to all of the "levee talk" - even though it was less than a mile down the road.

One unique event at the festival is the "Catfish Race". Each long trough has one catfish that starts out at one end being held back with a plexiglass divider. On "go" - the divider is removed and the sponsor does whatever they need to do to get that fish to swim to the other end without touching it. - In my observation, just waving your had in the water behind it seems to do the trick perfectly.

Levee Watch 2011
Watching the levee water rise is a hot topic around here. This is the levee to Lake Ferguson. The Mississippi River spills into this lake.
The approach onto the levee...
The flooded Yacht Club...

Notice the lamp posts.
There are two floating casinos located in this area. They will be closed soon for safety reasons - even though they won't flood (they float). The levee will close to the public Saturday night. The fear is that the water will keep rising and spill over the levee (see first picture) and into town or worse - that the levee will break.
Down to only four parking rows. There are many more rows that are submerged.
Submerged picnic area...
Notice the lamp posts.

My Bottle Tree
Here's my bottle tree that I bought a couple of weekends ago at an art festival. If you're not familiar with bottle trees...their folklore heritage believed that evil spirits would get trapped inside the bottles...yada yada...BUT I just wanted one because I thought it'd look cute in my yard!
Here's a great link if you'd like to learn more:

Most people use empty wine bottles on their tree but I wanted something a little more original. So I found these to get me started...

I love the colors but wish they were a little more substantial in size. I tried grouping them all together to see how it would be with a whole tree of these smaller bottles. But decided it was "too much".

So I think I'm going to use them as "accent" bottles with the majority being clear larger bottles. Now I've got to start my "clear" bottle collection.

Pottery Wrap Up
Here are my final pieces of pottery. When I made this bowl and platter - I didn't intend on them being a set. But I think they work rather well together for dip and chips. The platter didn't fire exactly as I'd hoped. If the paint gets too think, some of it will cook off - that's what I was hoping that it would do - but I'm still pleased.
